Framed by the vast Atlantic Ocean on one side, and the towering Seven Apostles mountain range on the other, we are now in an entirely different ecosystem – Camps Bay, Cape Town. No fires, floods, nor ticks.

Theatre on the Bay is just a few doors away from our balcony at the South Beach Hotel. So, young thespians in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors parade up and down, with overstuffed dance bags slung over well-toned arms.

We can hear voice lessons and watch dance classes taking place in mirrored rehearsal studios. Today, it was ballet barre led by percussive bongos, with the ocean breeze at their back. This too is South Africa.

For the moment, everything seems possible. Days feel as endless as the horizon. And the sun…

When evening comes, groups of African singers and dancers entertain hungry diners in packed beachside restaurants. Drumming fills the air and the energy becomes electric.

After just a few more days of seaside magic, Bill and I will complete the first month of our journey at the Cape Grace Hotel. This time however, we’re going to meet up with a friend of a friend from Santa Fe.

It’s always enlightening to have a deeper look into what we can only see on the periphery. It will further broaden our perspective of a place we’ve come to love, before making the next transition to our final location in South Africa for 2026.
