We arrived in a sort of other world, just two hours out of the city.

Pousadas are one of our favorite places to stay in Portugal. These repurposed castles, convents and monasteries offer travelers in Europe accommodations and experiences like no other.

This one, in Estramoz, dates back to the 13th Century. And is claimed as once being the residence of royalty.

It’s always thrilling to have a room in living architecture. To rest in a history that survives and continues to evolve. It helps to put our own lives into a deeper, broader perspective. With the passing of time, and all that happens along the way, we too can see ourselves in a trajectory and remember that the journey continues forward.

Tomorrow we drive to Convento de Sao Paulo, and spend two nights. Our friends from Lisbon will be there and we’ll meet them for dinner. We then head to the Algarve to see our friends from France.

On the way, Bill has a medical appointment. We are both currently sort of walking wounded. Traveling seems to take more out of us as we age.

Our friends from Santa Fe (who are also now in Portugal) recommended a clinic that they use when they’re here.

We called, had a meaningful conversation with a living receptionist, and were given an appointment that worked with our schedule. Imagine that! Hastle free. And we don’t have to wait three months to be seen.
