It occurred to me you might not have noticed that the two female figures in the boat at Chania were actually mannequins. It was the strangest sight – so unusual, that I asked a local person about it.

Carolina laughed and informed us that the figures are intended to call attention to the tavern beneath them. We had no idea there was a tavern down there.

The life-like mannequins were indeed eye catching, but they were a decoy, not the intended destination. We were supposed to take the next step, the step beyond (in this case, below), and not stop at the most obvious.

I remember being surprised the first time I heard a flight attendant advise us to “Look around. Your closest exit may be behind you.”

Bill and I weren’t even planning on coming to Greece. It was a last minute decision earlier this year, after canceling our trip to the Canaries. Now, Greece has become a favorite, and (if all goes well) we may return next year.

The images and experiences of this past month are seared in my mind and heart. I know I won’t remember the names of all the people and places we encountered. Many of those details have already been forgotten. But Bill’s photos will help make their recollection and the feelings they evoke more accessible.

We are now back in Athens, on our way to Amsterdam and then home. But I can’t stop thinking about a couple we spoke to before leaving the hotel in Chania. They approached us after seeing Bill and me for the first time the week before, in Heraklion.
I believe they said their name was Resnick, from Rochester.

It turns out that the husband grew up in my childhood neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. The wife is from the upper Westside, and her best friend lived at 410 Riverside Drive – where I lived for 15 years, before moving to Los Angeles.

You just don’t know who or what may be on the horizon.

As my friend, Kathy says, “Always stay open for surprise.”

And my mother says, “Do it now. It’s later than you think.”
