Now that I’ve gotten in touch with my feelings about our new president, his unfolding policy actions and political appointees; it’s been strongly suggested that I try to move on, not internalize negative energy, and to do my best to enjoy our time abroad. Well, it’s going to be a process. But Lisbon is a perfect place to start.

If you’ve been here, you already know that the city offers a unique combination of art, history, physical beauty and cultural diversity – all of it, affordable and easily accessible. Even more so than in Amsterdam.

No, this isn’t arm wrestling. I’m getting fitted for gloves.
I find comfort in the greater presence of people who look like me – people directly from Africa and those representing the African diaspora. There are many, and everyone seems welcome. Black and Asian people are more of the social tapestry here. It’s more of a mosaic. More noticeable than in neighboring Madrid or Barcelona. The difference is palpable.

In spite of rainy weather, we turned off CNN and resumed our adventures outdoors. Bill has become an expert European city dweller, even while using a cane for stability on slippery cobbled-stone side walks. I’ll take a photo of him when he least expects it. It’s quite impressive. As is the amazing architecture, culture and various modalities of art found absolutely everywhere.

Because Bill and I tend to return to the same hotels and restaurants, we’ve developed routines and friends. Folks actually remember us! Familiarity is welcomed and comforting, especially in times like these. Yes, you’ve heard it before, but we could easily live here. Portugal has made the process for long-term visas considerably more challenging; so we’re no longer looking for a flat to buy. Nonetheless, Lisbon continues to intrigue and excite us. Maybe, we’ll just rent instead.
