What a week!

My mother made it through the latest hurricane in Florida. She hunkered down with her 99 YO sister. No damage to their properties, selves or relationship.

Friends in Carmel and Monterey survived record breaking heat and fires. 110 degrees over several days in Central California! Unbelievable.

I received awful news about my (once) step-son. He is a NYC First Responder, now battling brain cancer in Brooklyn. His sister found me here, in Greece, after almost 40 years of no contact.

Meanwhile, while walking to the marina, Bill and I ran into two friends from Santa Fe!

We also met an artist who is a family friend of Greek restaurateurs in New Mexico. Georgia Maryol is the original owner of Tomasita’s! Her brother, James started Tia Sophia’s – another popular eatery in Santa Fe.

The family also owns Atrisco’s Cafe, and the precursor to what is now Pasquale’s. Who knew? And this is just one story of the positive impact immigrants have had in America. There are thousands more.

With all that is happening in the US, Africa and the Middle East, this week has been an emotional rollercoaster. And it’s not over yet.

On a more pleasant note, the crowds seem to have suddenly thinned here, in Mykonos. With only two cruise ships in the harbor today, we might have hit some official date (mid October) when the season begins to turn.

Although the weather continues to be glorious; beach clubs and shops are closing for the winter, and the streets are beginning to empty. I wonder what awaits us in Santorini and Crete.

Between the roar of large vehicles – packed with luggage and sun-baked tourists, heading toward the airport; we can finally hear children laughing in a neighboring playground, water lapping at the shore, birdsong and the inevitable sound of silence.
